The longtime active travel tour specialist is making its debut in Egypt with the new trip, which will combine hiking, biking, and kayaking with luxury hotel stays and a multiday cruise along the Nile River. “There’s no place quite like Egypt,” says Tom Hale, founder, president, and CEO of Backroads. “What makes this trip especially exciting is that it was proposed by one of our Trip Leaders, a Cairo native with deep connections to the destination. It’s a powerful way for our guests to explore Egypt by foot, bike, and boat and gain a deeper understanding of its history, landscapes, and culture.”
While traveling from Cairo to Luxor and Aswan, guests will experience Egypt’s ancient wonders in a variety of ways, like biking through the desert landscapes of Luxor and the West Bank, kayaking the Nile while passing ancient temples and riverside villages, and walking along Luxor’s sacred Avenue of Sphinxes. A local Egyptologist helps brings the country’s past to life for travelers along the way.
Time spent in local communities will highlight Egypt’s vibrant present. Guests will listen to traditional music and share tea with Nubian families and cook Egyptian dishes in a hands-on class.
Hotel stays include Mandarin Oriental’s Old Cataract in Aswan (said to be where Agatha Christie found inspiration for her book Death on the Nile) and Hotel Al Moudira in Luxor, a Relais & Châteaux property. The four-day cruise takes place aboard the Sanctuary Serai, a newly built riverboat that debuted in 2026 and is the only all-suite vessel on the Nile. Guests will feel the sense of adventure that comes with traveling on the legendary river but also journey between destinations in relaxing comfort.
